Best advice for toilet training a puppy?
10 Sep 2009
We have just brought a 9 week old Cocker Spaniel and would like some practical advice on how to toilet train him . We have read lots of books but would like as much practical advice as possible.
All tips would be gratefully accepted.
Take the dog out every hour, esp after drinking, eating, playing and napping.
Ignore the mistakes made inside and praise for the good outside.
limit water and food intake. remove all food at around 6-7pm stop water intake at around 8-9pm about an hour and a half – 2hours before bed time.
If you’re going to crate train and its time to take puppy out but he’s whining. Leave it until puppy stops, you dont want to teach it whining = being let out.

The best way to potty train a puppy is to figure out there bowl movements. You will want to feed him / give him water then wait to see when he has to go. This first time might be an accident, but if you time it you will know about when he will need to go out

Whenever your dog needs to pee or poo , most likely he might be sniffing the floor alot and walking alot , the first time my dog was toilet trained , i put newspaper in the cage then when she keeps sniffing the floor we put her inside and she starts to make her business , when she’s done , we tell her to pee and poo here and let her sniff her pee and poo . Then after that gradually she keeps going into her cage to do her business after several times , slowly we put newspaper in the bathroom and we usually bring her there and she pees and poos in the newspaper .

Do not use puppy pads! i used them and thought great, people used to tell me no on here and i never listened, it has now taken me until my puppy is ten months old to make him hold it until we are outside. Nightmare. Just lots and lots of praise when he goes outside, as soon as he wakes up he will need, and after a drink mostly too!
Good luck with new puppy!

i have a springer and she is really excitable so it took me ages to train her because every time i came home she would just immediately pee…anyway, I bought a spray called Get Off, it has a smell so they won’t go in the house but as i said she is very excitable so it only worked half the time, whenever she goes to the toilet on the grass outside just make a huge deal of it and give her a treat, do this for a week and they’ll get the hang of it! good luck!

Crate training is great for potty training. they won’t go in the crate because that is their comfy space and they don’t want to lay in their own junk. Also, because you want to teach him to go outside, you need to take him out a LOT, at least until you start to notice his routine and you can read him a little better. If he starts sniffin’ around, or doing circles, hustle to get him out cause he’s gotta’ go. If he does go inside, tell him no and take him outside ASAP, even if he already let it all out in the house, the association will teach him that he’s supposed to be outside for that. Have one certain phrase for him while your outside, and one certain spot which will be his "bathroom" lol. When we take Charlee out her phrase would be "Go Potty!" light happy voice of course. If they go in the house and you don’t catch them in the act, don’t scold them, they have short term memory loss lol. literally, they won’t know what you’re scolding them for. They need to be corrected within one minute at the most, of the act. When you do correct them just say sternly "NO!" or "bad dog!" whatever corrective phrase you choose since you’ll probably need it for other things too. lol. Hope this helps. and congrats on your puppy! =]
I almost forgot the treating thing also, when they do go out, treats, treats, treats, I swear you can teach a dog anything with treats. lol.

I think crate training is one of the best ways to toilet train a puppy. They will learn to hold their bladder because they won’t want to go in their beds.
Take your puppy to the toilet every time he wakes up, plays, eats, before you put him to bed and if he gets especially excited when visitors come over.
If he has an accident in the house, which he is bound to do for a while, don’t shout at him. Say ‘no’ firmly while he is doing it so that he knows it is wrong and lead him outside.
I read that you should try and distract their attention while they are going so that they stop and then you can take them outside and wait for them to go but with my puppies, no matter how loud or excitedly i tried to distract them, they just kept going until they were done.
Give him plenty of praise and a treat each time he goes in the correct spot.
You could pick a spot in the garden that you want him to go to because he will soon learn to associate that with going to the toilet.
If your puppy sniffs the floor or spins round in a circle, it means he needs the toilet. Take him outside asap.
The best tip I can give you is to be consistent and patient because even though it might not feel like it at first, your puppy will get the hang of it.

place the dog on its mat when he/she wakes up and repeat the same word either eg. do a piss
get the toilet training mats they smell like dog urine only to dogs and they will think if that dog went there i will to buy them at the pet store.
slowly move that mat to the nearst exit like every 3rd day and eventually she will go to the exit and you will know she needs to go. usually dogs need to go to the toilet about every 45 – 1hr depends on how much water and how big the puppy is.

never shout at your dog if it does it’s buisness where you don’t want it to because it will go behind your back and be scared of you!

When your puppy is doing his business outside, always tell him what he is doing. For example, if he is having a wee, say " go pee pee" or something along them lines anyway, and then praise him straight away. Ive done this with my dog and now she goes on demand!

We take our puppy out in the garden every half hour or so and sit with him until he goes to the toliet, when he does we praise him, and repeat until he learns
