Cute/Funny dog/puppy stories or things they do? And when to start more obedience training with my puppy?

September 4th, 2009

I’m missing my puppy so I started thinking about some of the funny stuff he does so that’s why I asked this question.

He loves to push doors until they close. He makes a game out of it because he’ll push it to make it close but try to get out of the room before the door closes completely. He has "locked" himself in my bedroom and in the closet because he couldn’t make it past but it’s funny to watch. He’s smart enough to put his two front paws and nose under the door and whine so I know where he is.

I also would like to ask when the best time would be to start obedience training with him. He’s a 9 month old chocolate lab/german shepard mix. I’ve worked with him and has the person who I got him from so he knows how to sit and come. He also will walk on the leash pretty well and is pretty well behaved.

~Thanks.~

I can’t think of funny or cute things my dog has done right now, but I can certainly think of some embarrassing things!

I do agility in a team with my dog. We were all standing around talking after class with our dogs sitting calmly around us, none were on leash.

My dog Morgan loves smaller dogs so while no one was looking, she took the little yorkie in her mouth and started to walk away. Nobody noticed until the yorkie started yelping from the basket the my dog put him in because he couldn’t get out.
I pretended to wonder how the dog got into the basket like everyone else, until someone pointed out that the only dog big enough to reach the top of the basket was my Mogs.
I was horrified!

She’s done it a few times. She would never hurt another dog, but she does like to steal.

You can easily start training now. Start small, with 5-10 minute sessions with the usual sits and stays.

My puppy used to love sitting in my pot plant boxes… thankfully there were no plants in them at the time. I’d caught him a few times digging in them… but as soon as he’d get caught he would sit in the box, over the hole he’d dug and look up at me like "Me done nothing wrong mummy" one of his ears would point straight up and the other would flop and he would give me the sadest looking puppy eyes ever. I would always start laughing even though I know I shouldnt. I had to take the boxes away… he’s too big now and they’d most likely break under his weight.

You should start obedience training now. I started at 5 months… I wanted to start earlier but I went away for a few weeks and we started puppy preschool late. Good luck

Start training now, here is my favorite puppy poem.
    The Life of a Puppy
This morning, I woke up & kissed my dad’s head.
I peed on the carpet, then went back to bed.
"The life of a puppy, oh my, this is great."
Then I thought about breakfast," I hope it’s not late."
Mom took me outside, we walked for a while.
This never fails to make Mama smile.
I sniffed of everything, that we did pass,
I ate something weird – it gave me gas.
I’m sure God loves me, I know that is true.
He gave me so many great things to chew.
Rugs, plants or rocks, I really don’t care.
What I truly like best, is Dad’s underwear.
That obedience book, was sort of yummy.
Though it didn’t sit well on my poor puppy tummy.
I threw up a bit, but that was all right,
When Mom found it later, I was well out of sight.
I made streamers of T. P., while running at full speed.
Mom is pretty quick — but I was still in the lead.
I flew under the bed, and Mom flew past,
She stopped-shook her head, and breathed,
    "You’re too fast."
Mama later phoned Daddy, and said, "It was frightening!"
That afternoon, she was sure I’d pooped lightning.
She’d sat at the computer, while I chewed the cord,
She thought I was mad, but I was just bored.
When Mama had enough, couldn’t take anymore,
That’s when my tushy got shoved out the door.
I love it inside, but outside is best.
Lay in the cool grass, and had a good rest.
That didn’t last long, there was too much to do–
Can’t quite remember where I hid Daddy’s shoe.
I found an old bone, and scratched at a flea,
I watched the dumb squirrels as they jumped in a tree.
I barked at the kids, when they got off the bus.
I can’t figure out why this makes Mama fuss.
I barked at the neighbor, I barked at the wind.
I barked and barked, till Mom yelled, "COME IN."
The sun dipped in the west-soon Daddy would come!
I sure love my daddy: we always have fun.
I barked at my daddy, then turned on my charms,
I woo-wooed, "Hello," then jumped in his arms.
Sitting under the table — it’s sooo hard to wait.
Daddy slipped me a goodie right off his plate.
I raced through the house, and scattered my toys,
Ricocheted off the furniture, and made lots of noise.
Mom found her purse – the one I abused.
Daddy let loose a chuckle. Mom asked "Amused??"
I cowered down low, I must be in trouble.
Dad said, "Wasn’t MY boy, it must be his double!"
Mom turned off the TV, and said,"Time for bed."
Dad said "Let’s go boy," and patted my head.
I got in my spot, between Mom and Dad,
I thought ’bout my day and what fun I had.
Mama kicked out my bone from the covers below,
Then let loose a sigh — a sigh deep and low.
She gave me a kiss, and snuggled me tight,
And whispered so softly, ‘My darling goodnight’.

My puppy actually puts both paws over her eyes and slouch on the floor if she has an accident. I think she learned it from the kids in our house. She really looks guilty hahah.

As for obedience training, he can start as early as you want. A lot of people start at 8 weeks old. Simple things like sit and down can be taught at any age! Start him early, he’ll think of it as a game!

I love dogs because they are not just beautiful but have such unique personalities.
I have one dog that knows several tricks. I always give her a little piece of a treat after each one and she knows several. I guess she thinks I’m too slow because she will do every single trick, one after the other without stopping until she has completed every trick. Then look at me like "ok, all done, give me all those treats now." It’s so funny. She even takes her little ball and throws it, runs back to me then goes and fetches it! It is so funny to watch her do her tricks on her own for me to see, just so she thinks that she will get the whole cracker treat rather than a little piece at a time.
I have another little guy who sits up on his own, like a Meerkat. I didn’t have to teach him. He just started doing it as a puppy and he has the best balance too. He can sit up, and if someone or something makes a noise he will stay sitting up and just turn his head to see what it is, and never wobbles or loses his balance.
The dog who does all of her tricks on her own will also go under the couch or bed thinking she’s being sneaky. Then if we start asking where she’s at, that she must have run away, etc., she will stick out 1 paw. Then comes the other paw and then her cold little nose. Then when you look at her she will run laps under the bed or couch.
I have a mischievious little girl, who knows I always wear baggy sweats when I walk my dogs first thing in the morning. There is a small lake with the street going around it which is very busy in the mornings with people going to work. I wear the baggy sweats because they are easy and fast to put on to take the dogs out before I have to get ready for work. Well, she figured out just how baggy they are and as soon as we reach tha lake, she acts like nothings wrong, doing her little walk, when all of a sudden she grabs the bottom of my sweats and the next thing I know she and I are having a tug-of-war with me trying to keep my sweats on and she’s wagging her tail pulling as hard as she cantrying to pull them down, and this is in view of everyone sitting in traffic on the road going around the lake!LOL
I’ve had dogs for over 20 years, and have so many funny stories about my dogs. They really are smart and funny animals, each with their own unique personalities.
Do you have any funny stories about your dogs?
It sounds as though you’re doing a great job already with your puppy. I think it would be fine to start obedience training now. The earlier you start the better, before the dog learns any bad habits. Just remember to keep your dog on a schedule for eating, going outside to pee and poo, etc.. Also, be patient and persistent. Your dog seems like a smart dog. He will learn pretty quick.
Best of luck with your dog. Hope I helped.
