Does anyone have good potty training techniques for dogs?

September 22nd, 2009

If I don’t get my puppy trained by the time my new baby brother arrives,(August 8), my puppy will have to be taken to my grandparents’ house.

After your pup eats, drinks, and sleeps take it out. If you see it sniffing around take it out. If you catch it in the act say no in a firm voice, scoop it up and take it out. Do not ever fuss at the dog after the deed is done, it has forgotten about it. Crate training is also a good tool for housebreaking. A rule of thumb I’ve always heard is how many months the dog is, is approximately how long it can hold it. (3mo=3hours) you can use that as a guide line. Always praise when it goes outside. I think you have plenty of time before your baby brother arrives. Just keep at it. Also just when you think you have them trained..there will be an accident. Just be patient, it will happen.
Good luck.

Crate training and consistency are your best bets.
Keep the dog in the crate at all times when it’s unsupervised and during sleep times. Let the dog out every hour and then gradually increase the amount of times between toileting breaks. Don’t punish the accidents. If you’re consistent in doing as I have stated, the dog should be crate trained within a couple of months–by your deadline. Don’t believe books that say that a puppy that’s young can be trained in a few days to a week. Their bladders need to mature-and so do they. Just be patient! :)

Crate training, in my opinion, is the only way to go. Keep your puppy in a crate just big enough for him to turn around and lay down in when you are not there or not supervising. Take him outside on a regular schedule (on a leash). Stay out til he goes. If he doesnt’ go, back in the crate and try again in 15min. Make sure to take him out after waking up and about 15min after eating. Praise him when he goes outside, of course. Dont worry, if you are consistent, he should be trained or almost trained in 2 months. Good luck!
