Dog Trick Training — Back-stall (advanced trick)
September 4th, 2009
This is a cool trick to teach your dog. It’s called a “canine backstall.” Basically, you teach your dog to jump on your back. Be careful, this is not recommended for old dogs or dogs too small or too large to do this safely. Use your better judgment. If you are looking for a new trick to teach your border collie or Aussie, here you go. It’s a good trick for most healthy dogs that weigh between 25 and 45 lbs.
You want to be careful with young dogs, whose joints haven’t set yet, as you don’t want to jar their growth plates. You might consider wearing a heavy sweatshirt because the dog’s claws can scratch you.
As they say on the TV exercise shows, check with your physician (or veterinarian) before attempting this or any other athletic activity. Do not attempt this trick if you have a pre-existing back injury or condition. Duh.
Have fun. Stay young. Play with your dog every day.

Years ago, when …
Years ago, when Blue was more active and we were training and competing a lot, I took my shirt off at the local swimming pool displaying some nasty back stall scratches. Raised a few eyebrows with the country club set that day. With some dogs a heavy sweatshirt is enough. Lots of disc doggers use neoprene scuba diving vests.

Have fun. Your border collies can do this. Be careful with the young one, as you don’t want to jar her growth plates before they’re set. Oh, and wear a heavy sweat shirt. Give me a shout if you have any Q’s.
