Really its just …
Really its just that some breeds take longer to train. Bulldogs have competed in ACK competitions.. heeling, sit, stay and even retrieving dun bells with the owners scent on them. Yes, they can be lethargic and are not as active as most dogs but they can still be trained..even high levels that are necessary for ACK competitions

Sheeve07, as stated …
Sheeve07, as stated I have had the oppurtunity to work with many dogs and have used a variety of training methods to include extinction, continous, fix/variable ratio, etc. Yes I understand that as the canine becomes more proficient you can start to withhold the food reward but some dogs do not respond well if food is withheld. I found that to be the case with dogs that are not very sociable or independent as your stated or have very low prey drive.

fhsfem you have to …
fhsfem you have to wean the dogs off the treats. I will use treats until the command is completely known…then I mix with praise and vary the reward. I have had one dog who did not care for praise at all…very independent. I always try to associate a verbal reward as in YES!! with food. So when the dog sat, I said YES!! which is just a verbal marker….and then a treat after. He was also weaned off of food by varying YES!! with food and without. It just takes time and patience.

I love ridgebacks. …
I love ridgebacks. My friend’s Ridgeback is better trained and more obedient than her collie and lab. They have all recieved the same treatment, she just took to it better. I look after the when she is in season (the other 2 dogs are males so she can’t be around them at that time) and she really is a bright dog, no trouble at all.

Sorry but your last …
Sorry but your last statement isn’t true. I’ve worked with many dogs over the past twenty years and yes the majority will work for verbal and or physical praise, but I’ve also had a few dogs that will not obey or remain focussed if food is withheld.
