Great Ideas For Pet Owners During Travel
January 21st, 2012
Every year, thousands of families bring their pets along on their vacations. After all, many pet owners consider their charges as part of the family and can’t afford to leave them home. For others, there is simply no one at home to watch the pet, no funds available for boarding, or the trip was a spur-of-the-moment plan and there was no time to consider anything else except to bring the pet along.
Before you and your pet say goodbye to home for the next few days or so, you will want to do some research and make sure you are choosing a pet-friendly accommodation, as not all places of lodging allow pets to stay in. This is why we have compiled this quick and painless checklist for pet owners wanting to get away from it all…except their beloved cats and/or dogs.
Research – A Must-Do During Times Like These
When trying to find out which places accept pets, there are many sources to check when gathering data, such as hotel and motel listings, campground guide books and online versions of the above. Then call ahead to confirm, as most print publications went to press at least a year ahead of time, and places may have changed hands or ownership status along with their pet policies. Make inquiries about the cost of pet accommodation, if applicable, ask if there is a deposit required, and if you own a large pet, ask about size limitations.
Consider a Portable Kennel
Most pets have no qualms about car travel. But sometimes it is. Pet kennels can easily turn into these fuzzy little (or big) critters’ homes away from home, because there can be many modes of travel incorporated into one trip – you may move from plane to bus to train or other forms of transportation. So you might want to check out portable pet kennels.
Different airlines have specific requirements and procedures for travelers bringing their pets with them, so find these things out well before the date of your flight. A variety of things will need to be gleaned from the airlines, such as the size kennel you can bring along, the food and water requirements for your pet and how long before takeoff they must be fed, among other details. Do ask everything, as the size carrier allowed under the airplane seats may be just the right size for a smaller dog or an average cat, should you own one.
Stuff for Spot
Your cat or dog is very much like a child who may have a favorite toy, or a special little blanket they cannot go anywhere without, so make sure you bring these favorites along when your pet goes traveling. Pet food in all forms is a must-bring, and this would include their treats. And if your pet may need medication of any kind, bring along any medicines and / or any pet vitamins, etc. that might be needed. And as an added precaution, bring along the phone number of your vet, in case there is an emergency.
Keep your carpet and rugs in top shape with carpet cleaning services. Choosing the right steam cleaning carpet service is crucial.
