How can i crate train a small dog?
04 Sep 2009
I am looking to get a full grown, small dog (example: Chihuahua or Shih Tzu) from a local dog shelter. The only problem is that the dog would be left at home for 6 hours everyday while I am at work. How can I crate train the dog to be comfortable and anxiety-free in it’s crate while I am away? How long can the dog hold it’s bladder for? advice?
Here are three good websites on how to crate train a puppy.

It depends on the age of the dog.
If it is young and not house trained, get a small crate. It makes them feel secure and cozy and keeps them from having an accident in the crate.
If its older and house trained get a bigger wired cage. It gives them more room to move around and be comfortable.
If all else fails get a couple baby gates and gate them in a room that has linoleum or hard wood floors like your bathroom. And don’t use puppy pads or news paper. That’s like encouraging them to do their business in the house.
And Shih-tzu’s are great dogs. Try getting one of those. They are truly wonderful dogs.
