how to potty training a new puppy of 4months?
25 Sep 2009
we just got her friday and shes a cockapoo. she has already taken a dump on the carpet and peed various times on wooden floor. we went out and bought those mats they can go on but where should we put them? we want her to be trained to need to go outside to go potty.
also bout what age should we start with the sit and lay or obedience training with her?
Sorry the potty training advice says "he" and not "she"…I keep it pre-written.
Set a timer to remind you to take your puppy out every 30 minutes. Take him to the spot you want him to potty and wait patiently until he does. Once he seems to be doing good with that, then set the timer for 45 minutes, and so on and so on. Work at getting it to 2 hours and up. Always take him to his potty spot. If he poops in the wrong place (house, or where ever) pick up the poop and put it where you want him to go and show him nicely so he will get the idea.
Also, take him out every time he wakes up, about 15-30 minutes after eating, and after hard play.
Never tell him NO when he potties in the wrong place because you will confuse him. He will think that the act of going potty is bad, not where he is going potty. And never stick his nose in it. You don’t want to scare him or make him angry with you.
Use positive reinforcement EVERY TIME. Tell him something like "good potty" when he gets it right.
Remember, he is a baby. Be patient and consistent. It takes a while to develop bladder control, but give him time and it will happen.
Good reading would be "Training Your Puppy" magazine type book by the editors of Dog Fancy magazine, and "House-Training" also by the editors of Dog Fancy.
You also might want to clean and deorderize the spots on the floor where she pees and poops so she won’t be attracted back to those spots. We use Fresh N Clean oxy-strength….it works great the first time, no need to use it over and over again to get rid of the smell and stain. I would swear by it!
As for obedience training….start NOW. You can never start too soon. We started at 8 weeks and he learned quickly.
Good luck

Find where she pottys now and start laying the pads there. Then slowly move the pads to the door to your backyard. Each day move them a little closer. Then finally put one outside right by the door and eventually stop using them. We did this for our 2 pups and it worked like a charm!

crate train. that dog needs to be put in a crate at night – animals don’t dewdee where they lay. that’ll teach her really quickly. i wouldn’t put the mats down really anywhere – you want to teach her to go outside, not inside – in my opinion putting those mats down inside is an open invitation for her to do whatever she wants. use those when a dog is too old to move and just goes wherever her/his buttocks takes her/him.
i’d say start now with the sit/lay obedience thing.

when we got our pup he was about 3 months old – cried and cried and cried when we put in him the crate at night, but he didn’t pee/poop. we still take him outside at night to make sure he goes to the bathroom before we go to bed (we no longer use the crate – he sleeps on his own bed up on our room at night).
doggy doors really help too. we’ve got one and he uses that whenever he’s got to go.

ok I had the same problem with my weiner dog, we had used newspaper for her and that is what she used for potty training. We also tried the pads for them to pee on and they didn’t work with b/c she had gotten use to peeing on the newspaper. At about the age of 5months we started taking her to the door about every 2 hrs and telling outside pee? then we would take her out and she would pee bring her back in tell good job and give her a treat, then she should get the hang of it. Now about the training you should start while they are young b/c they will learn easier and better.

Usually a dogs pee when they wake up and poop after eating.
So watch carefully these moments and take him to the appropriate place, where you want him to do these things. When he does praise him, reward him generously.
When he does in the wrong place, just let him know he’s made a mistake, but remeber, time is critical, it is good to let him know he’s made a mistake if you catch him during the act. Otherwise it won’t help.
