Is it possible to train a small dog to "go" in a litter box?

September 13th, 2009

I was thinking of getting a dog (small breed) and it would be cool if he/she could be taught to use a litter box. Is it possible?

Yes actually it IS very possible to do, if that is what you would prefer. Just remember dogs have larger and more stool that is also smellier. It takes devoted cleaning if you don’t want your house to have a "Clingy" oder that doesn’t go away and is obvious to all visitors. Cat litter is also bad for the respritory systems of dogs so it is not a good idea to use cat litter unless you want your dog to develop breathing problems and allergies. You can instead use pelleted litter (compressed absorbant paper by-product) or also shredded box material from a feed store etc.Remember also that cats cover their messes and won’t step in it….NOT true with a dog and they can track nasty stuff all over your house!

Sure is! My Mom used to have 2 Yorkie-Poos and they used a litter box when inside.

NO. Nor can you train it to speak English. Dogs have to be dogs, not cats.

Yes, indeed, if they are small and mostly young enough, I used to raise chihuahuas, and I would keep them in a playpen (a reg. baby’s playpen), I’d introduce them to a makeshift litter box (because regular size litter boxes were too tall for the tiny pups), they learned very fast, soon, I could let them out all the time if I wanted and they went right to the litter box! Good Luck! Persistance is key.

I wouldn’t advise it they’re not cats for one and it is alot messier and smellier than cats, just save yourself some time and let the dog outside, this is their natural instinct to do their business outside for crying out loud.

I’m sure you can because my friends backyard is a huge thing of cement because she has an inground pool and her dogs use that all the time. so i think they’ll go in the litter box… if you can train cats to pee in the toilet then surely u can train dogs to use the litter box.

Yes! You can teach a small dog to use a litter box or puppy pads. My small dogs use puppy pads, because I can just throw those away. I think it is a little less messy than a litter box would be. You can use either though.

of course. if you can teach a cat you can teach a dog. i mean we can teach dogs how to jump through a ring of fire… why not use a litterbox?

You could train a small dog to go in a litter box. It depends on how old it is . You should get a young dog and train it yourself. If you don’t have enough time on your hands to do that then you may want to consider getting an old dog not to old though but one that already knows how to go in the litter box.

my neighbor is physically incapacitated, and has a chihuahua that is trained to use the litter box in his pen, even though he goes out for walks during the day with another person. he was trained from early puppyhood.

I have an 8 pound dog. I got a box for her to go in, and put newspapers at the bottom. It has worked for the past 5 years. It is one of those shallow plastic boxes that people use for storage.
