puppy obedience?

I have a 4 mth old Lab mix, and hes been working on obedience training for a few weeks now.

So far, he can sit very well, and he can lay down if I use a hand command but he cant seem to get the hang of the voice command.

Also, we’ve been working on stay for a bit over a week and he hasn’t progressed at all.

So, what can I do to get him more used to the voice commands. And how do I teach him stay!?!

Thanks!!!

Kudos on using hand commands as well as voice. Most people seem to skip this important communication tool.

Have you tried using the hand commands in conjunction with the voice? In other words, give both the voice command and hand command simultaneously, and then when your pup obeys, reward him.

After some practice (I’d give it a few separate training sessions spread out over a few days), try using the voice command alone. He should catch on rather quickly.

If you’re still having trouble, you can also try whatever method worked in teaching him the hand commands (but with voice only).

As for "stay", the method I always use is detailed in the link below.

Keep in mind, that he’s still a baby and has the attention span of a tse tse fly. Keep up what your doing. Keep training sessions short and fun.

Until he sits reliably, use both hand and voice command, when you know for a fact that he understands the command, sometimes do only hand sometimes do only voice. If he seems confused, go back a couple of steps and help him.

As for stay, I think that "stay" is one of the hardest commands for a dog to understand. Stay should always be taught on leash. Since he’s so young, keep the stay very short. The idea is you want him to be successful at it. If you feel youself getting frustrated, stop. Also, stay very close on the stay exercise, he may not be ready for you to move to far away yet.

How I taught my dog to stay was:
I start out with my dog in a sit in heel position. With my left hand, palm open, I pass it in front of the dogs face and say STAY. I then step directly in front of him, toe to toe. start out by counting to 15, then you return to heel positin and release him quietly, give lots of praise and treat. If dog got up, I would put hold his collar and place him into the sit and stay "STAY" again, go back into the toe to toe position.

I also used feeding the dog as an opportunity to teach stay. In the beginning, I had the dog sit close. I’d tell the dog "Sit" then "STAY" using the same hand command as above, then put food bowl down. If dog gets up, I pick up the bowl of food and we start again. He will get the hang of it. Eventually, you will be able to place him further away and in different areas of the room.
