Puppy toilet training queries?

September 5th, 2009

I’m still of two minds about crate training and I have been told that puppies start learning when and where to potty but it doesn’t seem to be happening any time soon. I have 2 shih tzu puppies and i have been following the paper training, trying to teach them to potty in a designated place etc but it is still more miss than hit after 1 1/2 months. They are also wetting their bedding now and they seem to pee and poop whenever something has just been cleaned! What more can I do? Realistically, I am away from the house for 8 hours a day – I do not want them to be left in a crate so instead keep them in a playpen or section of the house with bedding, toilet area etc. However, as soon as they are out (when I get back) they pee/ poop anywhere. I want them to be able to potty in the house but in the right place. What more can I do? How are they meant to ‘hold on’? How long am I meant to wait them out when they have eaten their main meals? They hold on longer than an hour!
They are still puppies – the boy is nearly 2 1/2 months old and the girl is nearly 2 months. They are still learning and as a new dog owner, I am also still learning, hence the questions. I resent comments made, such as by the "Dog Rescue Director" that they need rescuing. They are very much loved and I am doing the best I can. In future, please don’t answer any of my questions. Your answers aren’t helpful.I am a teacher therefore have little time to get home before the school day ends. It would be great if I could but I need suggestions that will help accommodate those hours as a result. Potty training is the only thing I need help with. If it turns out that training them to go outside is the best option I will do it but in the mean time, what else can I do?

You shouldn’t have dogs being gone that long. Resign yourself to living in a dog toilet for the rest of your life. I’d suggest getting them into rescue.

    How old are the puppies?

I would definitely reconsider the crate training – it’s the best way to potty train your puppies, especially if you’re gone for long periods of time. However, depending on how old they are, they may not be able to hold it for eight hours.

Consider finding a friend or dogwalker to come in, play with them, and take them outside mid-day so that they are not crated 8 hours.

I know crate training sounds cruel, but it really isn’t. Puppies are used to being in a small den, and as long as they are not left for over 4 hours at a time and get plenty of exercise in the day, it really is your best bet. My dog loves her crate and she is 2 years old now.
    Here’s why crate training works:
1- Dogs will not poop/pee where they sleep. They want to keep it clean, so they have a strong instinct to "hold" it. Make the crate just big enough that they can turn around, but no bigger, or they will use one end to go in and one end to sleep in.
2 – By holding it for a period of time, and then taking them outside, they learn that that is where to go, not in your house. Dogs learn where to go rather than where NOT to go.

I assure you that I have raised many a dog in a crate their first year and not only were they potty trained within a few weeks, but they are happy and well adjusted, and still like their crates. I never even close the door on the crates anymore, but thats where my dogs choose to sleep. They see it as a safe haven.
Think about it this way, your bed isn’t huge, but if you had a good book or a tv, you wouldn’t mind spending a few hours there would you?
That’s what it’s like to a dog. Give them some toys and they are just fine for 3-4 hours at a time and all night as well. Come home on your lunch break to let them out and then you have no pee to clean up when you get home later!!

Even 4 hours in a crate when no one is home to let them relieve themselves is defeating your purpose and training them to poop in the crate! Someone has to be a keeper to establish routine, sleep in the crate, out for an hour to potty and play, back in the crate for 2 hrs. let them out to potty and play for an hour praise the pottying! Back in the cage for 2hrs. let them out to eat play and potty, back in the crate for the night and repeat same each day for about a month and you should be able to leave the crate open and a couple papers in the area you designate for potty needs.! Next best scenario; you must cover the whole area they are loose in with newspaper, tape it down, definitely get a crate for their sleeping quarters with bedding, leave the door off or open and propped. Little by little decrease the amount of Newspaper and when there is a "miss" show it to them and say "no" in a low voice and "what is that" same displeased low tone, pick up the poop and place it on the newspaper,(they do understand, irregardless of contrary opinions)when you come home and poop is on the papers, praise them "good dog" "oh what a good dog" be enthusiastic they will seek to please you. Then it’s just repetition and less and less paper until you just leave a few and your set. Good Luck!
