Puppy toilet training.. tips please!?
September 13th, 2009
I have a 12 week old puppy and having trouble getting him toilet trained. I have taken the vets advice and put drops on newspaper to attract him to do it there but still no luck and take him outside every hour or so. I dont know what else i can do,, any tips would be very grateful.
Thanks.
Don’t train him to pee in the house. Train him to pee outside. Crate train him, take him out often and praise him when he goes outside.

Take him out 10 minutes after he eats or drinks, then praise him when he does his business. He’ll start to understand pretty quickly!

As you put the drops on the newspaper, did you take him to it right afterwards? He may not ever find it since he’s a puppy and his mind is constantly running to different things.
Have you tried the "rubbing his nose" technique? Rub his nose in his own mess and then take him to where he’s suppose to go. Make him stay there for about 5 minutes.
When you take him outside and he finally does go, do you give him lots of praise? If you take him out and leave him outside for so long then he’s gotta go at some point. As soon as he does give him lots of praise so he knows he did good outside.

he is still very young to worry about it. Some just take longer. One of my dogs was 6 months old! Just keep doing what you are doing and he’ll get it.

if you see him messing in the house, discipline him by raising you’ree voice. he willrecognizeeyou’rere tone of voice with doing something wrong, after the discipline put him outside, continue until he starts going by himself.

When i got my pupy it was always good to be home alot. From what you said it looks like you are so thats good. What we did is we took some string and tied a jingle bell to it. Every time you decide to take him outside ring the bell. Pretty soon your puppy should catch on and ring the bell when he wants to go out side. It works great and my puppy learned it really fast. Hope this helps!!!

First, I would hang a bell on the door that you want the puppy to go out of. Secondly everytime that you take the puppy out of that door you take its paw and tap the bell. The bell must be placed low enough for the puppy to tap it on its own. I have a small fenced in area (which you can buy or make) outside of the door where I put the puppy in. I woudl take a piece of his droppings and place it in the area. Take the puppy out 15 minutes to a half hour after it eats. After he does his duties, give the puppy a treat, if he does not, do not give him a treat. The puppy will get used to hitting the bell and you will love it.
