Taking Care Of A Pet Rabbit

If you are looking for a friendly and loveable pet there really is no better choice than a rabbit. You will find that a rabbit will often be happy to sit on your lap and be stroked and petted.Remember, rabbit care is important and by looking after your rabbit you are doing your bit to ensure it leads a long and happy life.Rabbits are easy to look after and make a great addition to any family. To ensure your rabbit is healthy and happy try and follow some of these great tips.

Your new rabbit will need a safe, clean hutch with plenty of bedding for warmth. Make sure you can afford the cost of food and ideally buy a run so it has the opportunity to run around.Make sure the hutch you buy has enough space to accommodate a full size rabbit, with space to run and stand.Ideally, your hutch should offer enough space for the rabbit to make at least four jumps in any direction.Just like your own home the ideal hutch should be separated into distinct “rooms” with a space to play, eat, and use the toilet.Don’t forget that if you have more than one rabbit the space should be increased accordingly. To ensure the rabbit is warm at night you must invest in a good quality bedding. When lining your hutch use newspaper which should then be covered with dust free straw.Think carefully about where you position your hutch. Do not allow it to stand in direct sunlight for long periods of time and make sure it is in a well ventilated spot.Night time predators will scare a rabbit easily, so you should cover the hutch with a breathable fabric at night.Of course rabbits don’t want to be couped up in a hutch all day. Your rabbit would really appreciate a safe place to run and play and a rabbit run can provide this environment.

Your rabbits diet is important and you need to understand that they need 2 specific types of fibre – digestible and indigestible. This is because it goes through their digestive system twice.Do try and avoid the mass market muesli type foods available as these can be high in sugar and starch which can lead to increased weight gain, obesity and even diabetes.Try and buy a specialist vet approved rabbit food. These specialist products are affordable and generally available from a specialist pet centre, vet or online specialist retail outlet.Your rabbit will love you if you also feed it treats like banana, apple and celery.

Rabbits really do make great pets, and these simple tips will go a long way in ensuring your pet rabbit has a long and happy life.
