I want to enjoy my tiny backyard this summer but my dogs go potty everywhere. My husband and I want to train them to go only in a certain area so that we don’t have to watch our step. I was thinking about a dog run or exercise pen to enclose the area I want my maltipoos to use and then give them treats for doing it. What do you think? Has anyone ever trained their dog to go in a certain area of the yard? Tips from those who have are appreciated.

Walk the dog to the area that you want it to use, or be like the rest of us, get a shovel, bag and clean it up

my dogs "go" all over the yard-we dont train them. They would never learn. I would say somewhere near a bush or in a corner of the yard or some place that nobody really goes.

Try to move all their waste into one area. That way they will try to deposit it all there.

Or just get a scooper! You can hire someone to do it if necessary.

A lab I had before used to go in the neighbors backyard all the time… finally I cleaned it up and shoveled it to a field behind the yard. He quit going in the old spot and went to where I put it. Not sure if this will work or just got lucky.

I teach my dogs to use a certain area with a couple of those wooden pegs, some string and one of those pee posts lol.

Mark out the boundry line for where you want business done using the wooden stakes and string, put a pee post in there and for about a week, take the dogs to that area, on leash and praise like mad when they go within the string area. It’s just like, with inside the house, if they miss, when you’re not watching, you clean it up and ignore it. If you catch them in the act doing outside that, a sharp no, and being led to the area will help. After a few weeks the stakes and string can be taken down, but the pee post should be left there.

    Two things to remember:
    1) You want to use the "go potty" command with them. And you want to take them outside your yard and practice that as well. Otherwise, your dog will not know that other places away from your home can be bathrooms too.

    2) You need to keep the area they are supposed to use, clean. Pick up before you expect them to use that area again. Dogs, like people, don’t like to use a dirty toilet.

Oh, and don’t forget to leave a "door" into the area. It’s funny, years after you remove the string and posts, the dogs will still go to the bathroom through the door. Though often they will exit where the door isn’t because they’re happy they did it right lol.

I have a HUGE backyard, but nothing turns a beautiful park-like backyard into a nasty litter box faster than 2 dogs who dump poo everywhere! To solve the problem, we have been walking all the way out to the very back of the yard, and then giving the command, "Go pee," or "hurry, boys, go potty." This way, they are learning that this is where we want them to go, and they are also associating the command with the action. When they do it there, we praise them and congratulate them and there is frolicing. When they try to go and lift a leg on our screen house (the little gazebo there), we say, "Jack – Not there" and that usually stops him. Then we go over to him, walk him back "Come on, Jack, over here," and then say again, "Go pee," and wait. Usually, he will do his thing where we want.

The end result is that, when they smell their own poo, pee, etc., they are attracted back to that same spot, because they associate the smell with the action and the place. It takes a little time, but it works.

I don’t recommend enclosing them and having them pee THERE. That’s bad – it perverts their natural inclination to keep their kennel area clean. Instead, enclose them AWAY from the spot where you want them to go. Every couple of hours, let them out and take them to the spot where you DO want them to go, and wait until they go there before you allow them free run of your yard again. The trick is to keep them corralled if you cannot watch them, but make sure you let them out to go pee before they do it in the pen. Alternatively, you can just watch them every second, and if one tries to go in a spot that is undesirable, you stop them, put them where you want them, and then encourage them.

Well… my advice may not be the best, but i guess you should try it. ?_?

First, decide where you want to have the dogs to go. Then, when you see one of them pooing/ peeing in the wrong area, firmly say NO and put it in the area where they need to be. Continue this process, and eventually the dogs will learn to potty in that area. When they actually use that area, phrase them with a happy and calm tone- and once in a while, give them treats.

    Good Luck! x33
