Tips for house training a small dog?
04 Sep 2009
I have a 7 months old rat terrier mix. We got him about a month ago and are striking out in the house training department. I’ve always used the crate training method before. However if I put him in his crate he freaks out and has diarrhea.
Take it outside when it needs to pee, that really is all there is to it.
Unless you want to use the rocket science method. In that case the first thing to do is go buy a big book about rockets. Be sure to keep the big book about rockets handy so that you can whack YOURSELF over the head with it whenever you forget to take the puppy out when it needs to pee.

You have to have some area to put him if he doesn’t go potty outside. Like take your dog outside and if he doesn’t go, then put him in the crate or assigned area (indoor fenced off area, bathroom). Take him out 30 mins – an hour later. If he does go potty you can give him a treat and let him wander around and play! If he doesn’t you MUST repeat the steps
I tried everything with my little dog, but this works. Constancy is always the key with dogs. And there is no way consistency will fail. The only way training fails is if the human is not consistent .
